I had long heard of Hornung and Raffles, but had never read it. It was an interesting read that set up the concept of the criminal as the book hero, and the gentleman bandit. Truthfully, I much prefer some of the more modern examples of this genre, but as an historical piece it is worth reading.

a fun and gentle story about a gentleman burglar.
Does not stand the test of time.
Written when it was, the style requires some slogging through all of the language. Would not read any of the others in this series.
As mysteries go, they are quite simplistic. But the picture of the thinking of the "upper classes" in Victorian England is interesting. Raffles, by the way, was the prototype for Simon Templar, "The Saint" tv series
Not exactly what I expected as the story, told from the supposed best pal of the title character, seemed to spend more time complaining about how badly he was treated by his friend than telling the story. When he was dealing with actual exploits, it was okay, but did not like the style of writing, and it got very tiresome very quickly.
I have read the two previous books in the series and enjoyed them for the adventure of them.I recommend reading both as there are call backs in a Thief in the night. This book focuses more on how Raffles treats Bunny ( the Watson to Raffle's Sherlock) Both poorly and well. While simultaneously featuring Bunny more heavily for example two burgalries in this book are headed by Bunny which never happens in the other two novels. Which is prescisely why I lked this novel think of it as a buddy movie rather than as a thriller or adventure story. Pacing was decent and there is very little story in this novel but as a charecter study it works well.
Would have been better if the author had not felt the need to bring Raffles and his sidekick to justice. That was the weakest story in the book by far. I felt that the author was under pressure not to make Raffles and Bunny so appealing and living happily on the proceeds of burglary.
I had long heard of Hornung and Raffles, but had never read it. It was an interesting read that set up the concept of the criminal as the book hero, and the gentleman bandit. Truthfully, I much prefer some of the more modern examples of this genre, but as an historical piece it is worth reading.
