Drawing on fantasy and nightmare, Through the Night is a philosophical horror story charting the madness of a father whose son has committed suicide.
Dentist Karl Meyer’s worst nightmare comes true when his son, Ole-Jakob, takes his own life. This tragedy is the springboard for a complex novel posing essential questions about human experience What does sorrow do to a person? How can one live with the pain of unbearable loss? How far can a man be driven by the grief and despair surrounding the death of a child? A dark and harrowing story, drawing on elements from dreams, fairy tales, and horror stories, the better to explore the mysterious depths of sorrow and love, Through the Night is Stig Saterbakken at his best.Through the Night Stig Saeterbakken Seán Kinsella 9781564788627 Books
This book is a staggering portrait of depression, always painful and sometimes frightening to read, but compelling at every page. I also caught myself being angry at the author for ending his own life despite having such talent. I so much wish he would have kept writing. The first half of the novel is written in a realist style; the second becomes more dreamy, fairytale-like. A recurring motif is a house where one goes to meet one's deepest fears. This image has had such an impact on me that dreamt of a desolate village where that house was to be found. Overall, the book haunts you for days after you finish it. The only detail I didn't quite like is the twist at the end (but it is so subtle that it almost leaves the choice to the reader whether to decipher it or not). I recommend it highly.Product details

Through the Night Stig Saeterbakken Seán Kinsella 9781564788627 Books Reviews
Sorrow so deap that it hurts to read about. Sorrow so unbearable that it must have been almost impossible to write about. Sorrow that comes from something that cannot be explained, or discussed, or forgotten or forgiven. Therefore guilt is the only emotion available. A dark and frightning story that one wishes had a happy ending. No such luck! Sorrow has no neat ending.
